Stanley R. Mikuta

Stanley R. Mikuta, 93, of Canonsburg passed away Monday September 11, 2017 in Canonsburg Hospital.

He was born February 7, 1924 in Washington a son of John P. and Anne K. Peters Mikuta.

Mr. Mikuta was a graduate of Washington High School Class of 1942. 

He was inducted into the United States Army during World War II and served as a paratrooper and anti-aircraft gunner; participating in the campaigns for Luzon and the Southern Philippines.  He was a decorated war veteran who during his military service earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars; silver star medal; Philippine Liberation Ribbon and one bronze star; Purple Heart; Bronze Arrowhead; Good Conduct Ribbon; American Theater Ribbon; and the Victory Medal.  He was wounded in action in Luzon-Taygaytay Ridge.

Following his Honorable Discharge from the US Army, he attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics for two years. 

He had a long and dedicated career spanning several decades working for Pennsylvania Transformer, McGraw Edison Corporation and then Cooper Industries in Canonsburg as a design draftsman.

Mr. Mikuta was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg where he was an usher and member of the Catholic Men’s Club.

He enjoyed bowling in the SNPJ Bowling League and the Washington County Jail Guards League. 

Mr. Mikuta was past President of Pennformer Federal Credit Union in Canonsburg.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post #175 in Washington.  Collecting coins was one of his hobbies.  At the age of fifty, he began taking piano lessons and continued for many years.

On January 30, 1949 in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, he married Marjorie Lawrence who preceded him in death in 2003. 

Surviving are five children; Kathryn Hess of Washington, Becky (John) Coulter of Avella, Daniel Mikuta of Pittsburgh, Jane Mikuta of Washington and Lawrence (Sandra) Mikuta of Stockton, NJ; and a brother John (Lee) Mikuta of Valdosta, GA.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his cousins Bernie and Joe Mikuta.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Beth Mikuta during infancy, a brother Theodore Mikuta, and a son in law Dallas Hess.

Friends will be received from 2-8 p.m. Thursday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home at 194 East College Street in Canonsburg.  Departing prayers will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday September 15, 2017 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church.  Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.  Full military honors will be accorded by the United States Army and the American Legion Post #175 of Washington.
