Dr. John Chupinsky, 101, of Washington, PA, passed away peacefully on September 29th at Hawthorne Woods Assisted Living. He was born on April 9, 1925, in Wolfdale, PA, the eldest child of the late John and Mary Rohal Chupinsky.
John graduated from Trinity High School in 1943. He then entered the military and was a proud U.S. Army Veteran who served his country in WWII. He served with Company A, 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion from August 1943 through November 1945, attaining the rank of Captain. As part of his service, he saw battle at the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he went on to attend Washington and Jefferson College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, graduating in 1953.
John married the love of his life, his beloved Eva Petronka on July 15, 1951, at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, with Father Nicholas Fedetz officiating. They celebrated 73 years of marriage together until her passing in January 2025. Dr. John practiced dentistry for 35 years in the Washington Trust Building, with Eva working by his side as office manager, until his retirement in 1988.
Dr. John was a lifelong member of St. John’s the Baptist Orthodox Church, where he was recently honored by the archbishop for his remarkable 100 years of membership. He dedicated his time to the church in numerous volunteer capacities, including serving as council president for 20 years. Shared passions enriched their lives; Dr. John and Eva performed with the Balalaika Strings of Western PA, playing the mandolin and balalaika, respectively. Together they also actively helped organize their high school and army reunions well into their 80’s. He enjoyed the piano, violin, gardening, traveling and stamp collecting. In June 2024, at the age of 99, Dr. John had the extraordinary opportunity to return to Europe for the 80th D-Day anniversary, commemorating the Battle of Normandy.
Deceased in addition to his parents are his brother, Daniel Chupinsky of Glenshaw, sister, Irene McCullough of Erie. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Nick Petronka & sister-in-law, Geri Petronka; his cousins David Sweda and Philip Sweda; along with 23 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
We will always remember your friendly smile and greeting when asked how you were. Go greet your family in heaven with the same joyful words: “I’m full of vim, vigor, vitality, pep and steam and so happy to see you!”
