“WWII Veteran”

 

Edwin F. Mersino, 88 of Meadowlands died Tuesday April 21, 2015 at his home in Marshall, TX.  He was born March 10, 1927 in Canonsburg, Pa. the son of William and Mary McGilvary Mersino.  Although he spent his young years in Canonsburg he moved to Meadowlands in the early 1950’s, and to Marshall in 2009.

 

He was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Army in the 11th Constabulary Squadron in the Armor Division during the post WWII occupation of Germany.

 

Mr. Mersino was an active member of the Bears Club in Meadowlands.  He was also a member of the American Legion Post #902 in Houston and the VFW Post #191 in Canonsburg and served on their Veterans Honor Guard.

 

For thirty-five years he was employed as a steel-worker by Cytemp/Universal Cyclops in Bridgeville, PA.

 

On September 27, 1947 he married Josephine S. Encandela who preceded him in death.  Also deceased are sister Elsie Knight, brother John Mersino, half sister Ann Mersino and half brothers Bill, Bert and Chris Mersino.

 

Surviving are two sons Edwin Mersino of Pearl City, HI and William (Terry) Mersino of Marshall TX, a sister Cora (Charlie) Dunn of Canonsburg.   Also surviving are three grandsons Chad (Debbie), Clint (Melaina) and Heath (Ruth) Mersino as well as six great grandchildren; Laura, Claire, Nate, Luke, Caleb and River.

 

Ed was a very special man.  He was also known as Eddie, Herc (in his young days) or Smiley.  Anybody that ever met him, remembered him for his mischievous humor, big smile and fun loving nature.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, raising hell at his Camp “Aches and Pains” in Marvindale, drinking beer at the Bears Club and other social meeting places, gambling  (especially with Terry) and traveling with Josie to Hawaii and Texas.  He loved his family and was devoted to them.  Kids were always the brightest light in his life!  

 

Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Sunday and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home at 194 East College Street in Canonsburg, PA at which time a procession will proceed to the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Full military honors will be accorded by the United States Army and the VFW Post #191 Honor Guard at the service pavilion at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies at 12:30 p.m. Monday April 27, 2015.
