On Thursday, November 7, 2024, Elvira “Vera” Martys, formerly of Canonsburg, peacefully passed away leaving a legacy of warmth, dedication, and joy. At the time of her passing, she had been a resident of Celebration Villas of South Hills.
Vera was born June 14, 1929 in Canonsburg a daughter of Philip and Assunta Mark Palumbo.
She was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Church in Canonsburg.
Her desire to help all led to her becoming a volunteer at Canonsburg General Hospital for over 35 years.
She loved all sports and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates and Pitt Panthers fan.
Vera’s greatest attribute was the love she had for her family. She especially loved family vacations where she could sit peacefully on the beach with the waves at her feet. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed all gatherings of friends and family.
Vera loved playing cards and games of chance. She belonged to the same card club for over 40 years!
On June 7, 1952, she became the beloved wife of Stanley F. Martys. Vera embraced the role of wife and mother for 55 years.
Surviving are two sons Lawrence (Scott) Martys and Robert (Holly) Martys both of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Heather (Matt) Richardson and Michael (Patrizia) Martys; a sister Delores (Michael) McHalpine of MI; two great-grandchildren, Briana and Madeline Richardson who called her “Gigi”.
Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Deceased in addition to her husband and parents is a brother Philip “Junior” Palumbo and two sisters, Edith Palumbo and Delia Palumbo.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 15, at Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home on 194 East College Street in Canonsburg. Departing prayers will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 16, followed by a mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church on 317 West Pike Street in Canonsburg. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.
