James H. Boylan of Washington passed away peacefully on Monday November 23, 2015 at the age of 94 in The Donnell House in Washington. He was born in Philadelphia on August 14, 1921 the first son of Thomas and Mary Mullen Boylan.
Jim attended West Catholic High School in Philadelphia where he excelled at academics and sports. After serving as Chief Petty Officer on the USS Philadelphia during WWII, he returned to his hometown to marry Dorothy Detterline with whom he fathered five beloved children, Kathleen, Patricia, Thomas, Mary Ellen, and Theresa.
Following the war, he pursued academics at University of Pennsylvania. Jim started his career at RCA in Camden, NJ. Looking to the future, he entered the retailing business moving the family to Washington, PA to become merchandising manager at Lang’s Fashion Store. Jim's hard work and dedication led him to acquire the business and expand it at its peak to six stores. He became an icon in retailing and was well known in New York City's Garment District. Jim was also a pillar in the Washington community dedicating his time and energy to local charities, community organizations and as a past board member at Washington Financial Bank.
Above all, he was a family man who had a deep commitment to his Catholic faith and church. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and the Holy Name Society.
Surviving is his son Thomas Boylan (Lois) and two daughters Mary Ellen Jutca (Alan) and Theresa Meehan (Myles), his brother William, 17 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, his son in law David Madigan, his daughters Patricia Dimmack, Kathleen Madigan, grandsons Richard Dimmack, and James Dimmack.
Friends will be received from 11:30-12:30 p.m. Friday November 27, 2015 in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church at 300 Pike Street in Meadowlands. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. following the visitation in the church. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Peters Township.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to John F Kennedy Catholic School, 111 W. Spruce Street Washington, PA 15301 and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church at 300 Pike Street, Meadow Lands, PA 15347.
