Joe was born on September 13th, 1945, in Pittsburg, PA, graduated from Wilkinsburg High School, and lived most of his life in the surrounding area. For much of his life, Joe struggled with his illness and the resulting difficulties. Despite his suffering, he was a loving father and faithful caregiver to his only daughter Sara Hood, raising her when he was well, on his own, until the age of nine. Eventually he made painful decision to relinquish custody of her to a loving family hundreds of miles away. For having the courage to make this sacrifice for her, she is forever grateful.
