Daughter of Ann Camille (Malooly) Yaw and Charles Russell Yaw, she was raised by her Aunt Mary Malooly after her mother passed during flu epidemic in the early 20’s. Mary Ellen went on to become a Registered Nurse.

In November of 1941, she married William Leo Vogler at Fort Knox, KY. The couple moved to Washington, PA in 1945. William passed away in 2009 after almost 68 years of marriage.

They raised three children, Bernard (Lois) Vogler of Hopewell Township, PA; Elizabeth (Vogler) Laurine of Lee's Summit, MO; William (Bettye) Vogler of Hitchcock, TX. A fourth child, Barbara Rose died at birth.

She was blessed with 9 grand children- Lawrence (Michelle) Laurine, Timothy (Susan) Laurine, Barbara (Ron Tucker) Walton, Michelle (Don) Wonderly, Dan Laurine, Lisa (Rowan) Johnston, David (Sabrina) Vogler, Kenneth Vogler, and Will (Nichole)Vogler, as well as 19 Great Grand Children and 21 Great Great Grand Children.

Mary Ellen was last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann Camille, her father, Charles Russell, her brothers, Charles Martin and Robert Russell and her sister Katherine Anne, a daughter, Barbara Rose, and her husband, William.

She is survived by one sister-in-Law, Rita Elizabeth (Vogler) Adams, three children and 24 loving nieces and nephews and much loved by her extended families, Jack and Lois Florian and children, and Tom and Sandy Laurine and family.

Many loving and caring neighbors will also miss her including Greg Wasler, Shirley Pallet, Dan and Connie Passo.

Mary Ellen was an Elementary School nurse for Trinity SD for several years, but most of her nursing career was spent at Washington Hospital.  She worked most departments, but spent the greatest amount of time in the Maternity, Pediatric and Emergency Room departments. She finished her career at the hospital as the Night Nursing Supervisor. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from California University of PA.

Mary Ellen had a very strong faith and served her St. Hilary Parish as a CCD instructor, Eucharistic Minister, Scheduler of Eucharistic Ministers, and as a member of the Christian Mothers. She attended daily Mass and led the Rosary before the service. She was also known for walking the mile plus to and from week-day Mass regardless of the weather – it gave her time to contemplate. She was a recipient of the Bishop's award, Manifesting the Kingdom, for demonstrating the presence of Jesus in her life and her service to Roman Catholic Faith through her home parish. She did volunteer work with the March of Dimes, Girls Scouts and Red Cross.

Her hobbies were gardening and crocheting. Her great grand daughters received a crocheted period doll each Christmas for years – a project she would work on all year long to have enough dolls ready for Christmas giving.  Many hours were spent in genealogy research for her Irish roots since the family records were lost in a fire in Ireland.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday February 20, 2015 in Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home at 1290 Jefferson Ave. in Washington, PA.
