Philomena Palmieri, 78, of Canonsburg died Thursday September 3, 2015 in West Penn Hospital in the presence of her loving family.
She was born September 5, 1936 in the town of Sulmona in Abruzzo, Italy the daughter of Gaetano and Carmela Tirabasso Palmieri. As a young girl while living in Italy during World War II she and her family hid themselves on the mountains of Abruzzese Appenins. In 1955, she came to the United States and was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Salvatore “Peanuts” and Loretta Tirimacco Palmieri of whom she became the loving daughter.
Miss Palmieri worked as a seamstress at the Bobby Brooks Clothing Company in Meadowlands and at Marlene's Bridal Shop in Canonsburg. She also worked as a cook at McMurray Hills Manor Nursing Home.
She was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Canonsburg for more than sixty years.
She loved to garden and cook, but most of all, she loved spending time with her many younger cousins that she considered her grandchildren.
Surviving is a brother and a sister Maria Brunetti (Salvatore) Cipriani of Italy and Luigi “Gino” (Anna DelRomano) Palmieri of Australia and a sister-in-law Del Monaco Nunziata.
Also surviving are her nieces and nephews in Italy; Carlo, Angela, Giuseppe and Anna DiPlacido; Carmela, Rosetta Marinucci, Franca and Daniela Palmieri; Francesco, Carmelina and Gaetanino Cipriani and her nieces in Australia; Antonella, Rita, Gabriella and Gianna Palmieri. Surviving are her cousins in the United States Lisa (Joe) Cerenzia of Canonsburg, Judith (Mike) Burns of Johnstown, David (Bobbi) Mark of Canonsburg, Eric (Janet) Mark of Eighty Four and Gina Mark of Montrose, CO and their children whom she considered her own grandchildren; Eva Roman (Geoffrey) Popovich, Adam (Danielle) Roman, Kaitlin (Danny) Kroll, Mark Cerenzia, Lindsey Burns, Kyra Burns, Konrad Burns, Matthew Mark, Marissa Mark, Hannah Mark and Ryan Wudkwych.
She was preceded in death by four sisters Maria Palmieri, Assunta Palmieri, Teresa Palmieri (Salvatore) DiPlacido and Maria Palmieri (Guerino) Marinucci and three brothers Alberto Palmieri and Domenico Palmieri and Filippo Palmieri and a cousin Sante Marinucci.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home at 194 East College Street in Canonsburg. A vigil Service will be held in the funeral home at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Departing prayers will be held in DeAngelo Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday September 9, 2015 follow by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church at 317 West Pike Street in Canonsburg. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patrick Parish for Family Promise Ministry for the homeless at 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, PA 15317.
