Rev. Thomas D. O’Neil, 82, of Washington passed away Saturday April 18, 2026 in Washington Hospital.
He was born September 18, 1943 in the South Side of Pittsburgh a son of the late Lawrence and Germaine O’Neill O’Neil.
During his youth, he attended school at St. Anselm grade school and high school.
In 1965 he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at St. Vincent College and then in his Master of Divinity Degree in 1968 also at St. Vincent College.
Father O’Neil was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, on November 15, 1969 in St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Braddock by Bishop Vincent M. Leonard. He was assigned first to St. Bartholemew in Penn Hills, then to St. Philip Church in Crafton, and then to Our Lady of Loretto in Brookline and subsequently to St. Luke Church in Carnegie. His first pastoral assignment was at
St. Ann Church in Bulger, and then assigned as Pastor of St. Hilary Church in Washington where he served faithfully as the only priest for thirty-one years from June 28, 1986 to July 10, 2017.
From 1994 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2006 Father O’Neil was a member of the Priests Council. Father O’Neil was the Chaplin of Washington County Health Center for 18 years from 1986 to 2004 and became part of the Pastoral Ministry Team at Washington Hospital. In addition, he ministered to various nursing homes and coordinated the RCIA Right of Christian Initiation of Adults into members of the Catholic Church.
For twenty-nine years, he ran parish travel clubs at St, Luke, St Ann and St. Hilary Churches.
Father O’Neil was an avid Pirates Baseball, Penguins Hockey and Steelers Football fan and enjoyed traveling to Steelers away games as part of the travel club destinations. He enjoyed boating and spending time at his cottage at Yough Lake. He always enjoyed having his closest friends over for Sunday football games.
Surviving are two sisters Mary Dunkerly and Peggy O’Neil both of Lewisburg, PA and a nephew Robert Dunkerly, Jr. of Richmond, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Sister Katherine O’Neil. IHM, several aunts and uncles and a brother in law Robert Dunkerly, Sr.
Friends will be received from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday in St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church at 320 Henderson Avenue in Washington, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday April 23, 2026 in St. Hilary Church with Bishop Mark Eckman and Father Carmen D’Amico as celebrants. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
