Richard McConnell Obituary

Richard A. McConnell, 85, of Houston PA, passed away Sunday, February 19th, 2023, in his home. He was born on July24th, 1937, in Chartiers Township, the son of the late George McConnell and Katherine (King) McConnell. Mr. McConnell was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church. Prior to his retirement, he worked in shipping for McGraw Edison in Canonsburg and Washington Steel Corporation.

Married on October 8th, 1960, Richard is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rebecca (Skowvron) McConnell. Becky, his favorite golf partner, and partner-in-crime was known to pad her golf score a bit (but he never called her on it).

Also left behind to cherish the memories are his son Richard M. (Heather) McConnell of South Fayette Township, daughter Robin (Ken) Hershberger of Upstate New York; six grandchildren, Bill, Michelle, Taylor, Luke, Logan, and Raelyn.

He was an avid bowler and bowled many 3-game series over 600. He loved to hunt anything that flew in the air and often traveled to Iowa to hunt pheasants or to the Chesapeake Bay to hunt ducks. When not chasing birds, he could be found hunting deer.

His favorite recreational passion was golfing. Once, he shot the course record at Washington Country Club, July 15th, 1992, a 5-stroke under par for a score of 66. Not to be outdone, at the age of 84, he shot his first hole-in-one at the Andover Golf Course in Ohio - a par three 175-yard hole.

Frequently volunteering for the parish, whether it be making perogies, renovating bathrooms, or cutting the cemetery grass, he gave of himself freely. He would give you the shirt off his back and had a special passion for children, often stopping and taking the time to talk with them.
