Mary Avola Cancilla, 96, of Canonsburg has passed to God’s Hands surrounded by her loving children on Saturday August 26, 2017.
She was born November 2, 1920 in Cattolica, Sicily in Italy a daughter of Pasquale and Rosa Cantino Avola.
Mary operated her own beauty salon in her home on Spruce Street in Canonsburg for many years, but her most important career was raising her children and caring with great love for her grandchildren. Her greatest legacy was the lessons that she taught her children and grandchildren. Her attitude was always positive and made a lasting difference in the lives of her children, grandchildren and all those who knew her.
Mary was the wife of the late Leonard (Leo) B. Cancilla, Sr. and loving mother of Sandy Young of Canonsburg, Patricia (Dr. William) Sulkowski of Upper Saint Clair and Leonard B. (Kymberly) Cancilla, Jr. of Houston.
She was also the doting grandmother to Amy (Ray) Crothers, Alexander Sulkowski, Leigh Slowey, Leonard B. Cancilla, III, and Anthony Cancilla. She was also great-grandmother of Luke Crothers, Isla Slowey and Kamryn and Anthony, Jr. Cancilla.
She is also survived by a sister-in-law Gloria Cancilla, many nieces and nephews and a lifelong friend Catherine Alexis.
She was preceded in death by her brother Frank Avola and her sister Rose Bianchi.
Friends will be received from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Monday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home at 194 East College Street in Canonsburg. Departing prayers will be held in the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home followed by a mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday August 29, 2017 in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg. Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Canonsburg.
